Around Us a Sea of Fire edited by Barbara Engelking and Zuzanna Schnepf- Kołacz is the first publication on the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, inspired by the exhibition at the POLIN Museum, to present the events from the perspective of civilians. During the uprising, they went down into bunkers and hiding places, defied the Germans and the system of murdering defenceless people in extermination camps that the Germans had imposed. Instead of reporting for transport, they went into hiding. Their quiet resistance was just as important as the resistance fought with weapons in hand. In this richly illustrated, album-like publication, the authors—including both
distinguished historians specialising in the Holocaust, and writers such as Hanna Krall, Andrzej Leder or Mikołaj Grynberg—reflect on the theme of the fate of Jewish
civilians during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.
