The legacy of the Lithuanian yeshivas, which flourished from 1802 to 1914, still dominates Orthodox Jewish society. This is the first systematic study of them in their social and cultural context.The main focus is the yeshiva of Volozhim, which in its independence from the local community was the model for everything that followed, but chapters are also devoted to the yeshivas of Slobodka and Telz, and to the kolel system.
